What is Turnitin Similarity and how do I use it?

Turnitin Similarity is a plagiarism detection tool that is used in Canvas to review assignments. Assignments are compared to an internet database and given a percentage score based on how much content is identical to existing resources.

Turnitin Similarity is integrated directly into Canvas for students and faculty.

Faculty settings
Faculty can add Turnitin Simiarlity to an assignment in Canvas to have all student submissions reviewed for plagiarism.

1. Log in to Canvas and open your course.
2. Click Assignments in the course navigation menu. Create a new assignment by clicking the + Assignment button. To add Turnitin Similarity to an existing assignment, click on the assignment to edit it. Scroll down to the assignment Submission Type and use the dropdown menu to select Online. Under Online Entry Options, select File Uploads.
3. Set the due date and click Save & Publish.

1. Scroll down to the Plagiarism Review section and select Turnitin from the drop-down menu.
2. Exclude from Similarity Reports: Use this option to choose exclusion options or leave them blank if you do not want any exclusions.
3. Submission Indexing: Use this option to index all submissions. An unchecked check box will still return a plagiarism report, but assignment submissions will not be matched against any future submissions.
4. Generate Similarity Reports: Use this option to customize how reports are generated.
   1. Immediately and on due date: Generates a report at the time of submission and on the assignment's due date. Turnitin recommends this option as it allows for a collusion check within your class.
   2. Immediately: Generates a Similarity Report at the time of submission.
5. Show report to students: Choose if and how to show reports to students.
   1. Never: The report unavailable to students.
   2. After the due date: The report is available to students as soon as the assignment due date passes.
   3. After the assignment is graded: The report is available to students when their assignment is graded.
   4. Immediately: The report is available to students upon their submission to Canvas.
6. After customizing, click Save & Publish.
