How do I make changes to the Mac OS X firewall?

Follow the steps below to make changes to the Mac OS X firewall.

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the display.
  2. Click Sharing in the System Preferences window.
  3. Click the Firewall button.
  4. If window states Firewall Off then click the Start button to start the firewall.
  5. To add a service:
  • Click New.
  • Choose the application's name (or Other) from the Port Name dropdown menu.
  • Enter the TCP port(s) in TCP Port Number(s) and/or UDP port(s) in UDP Port Number(s).
  • Enter the application or service in the Description field if it is present.
  • click OK.
  1. Leaving the System Preferences window open, test the application to make sure the port is working correctly.
  2. When you are sure the application is working correctly, choose Quit from the System Preferences menu.
