Banner Reimplementation Project updates

Banner is the enterprise resource planning system that Wayne State University administrative staff use to safely store all student and employee information important to the university's function. Computing & Information Technology (C&IT), Finance and Business Operations (FBO), and the Office of the Provost initiated the Banner Reimplementation Project in 2017 to provide a more mature product and added functionality for all users.

Significant progress has been made improving many services across campus, including financial aid, registration and class scheduling, tuition reimbursement, graduation applications, and more. In some areas, employees are now able to access information and complete data processing faster through automated and streamlined methods, reducing the need for manual corrections. This saves employees an average of 16 hours-a-week that can be used to support the campus in other ways.

What this means for students

Students have experienced more accurate financial aid awards, a stable class registration process, and are receiving diplomas in the mail sooner.

"The positive impact for our students is the most exciting part. Implementing new and updated self-service functionality allows students, faculty and staff to have more information at their fingertips and perform actions themselves - improving business processes and reducing manual effort," said Enterprise Project Leader, Heather King.

New features coming in 2020

The project team is planning to introduce several new features for students and employees in 2020. Students will be able to add themselves to class waitlists; receive financial aid refunds through an updated direct deposit process; and securely grant their parents proxy access for tuition payments, viewing grades, and more without having to share their AccessID and password.

"The collaboration has been impressive - so many different people tied their expertise together to make a difference, and they should feel very proud of the accomplishments made thus far," said King.

These upgrades help further C&IT's mission to provide systems and services that support and enhance Wayne State's teaching, learning, research and administrative activities. C&IT strives to provide excellent customer service, respond to the changing needs of the university community, and make it easy and convenient for everyone to use technology at Wayne State.
