C&IT helps feed students in need of assistance
Student success is a top priority for all Wayne State employees, but you can't have success without the basics. Enrolled students in need can find a plethora of support services on campus, including supplemental food and personal hygiene items at Wayne State's on-campus food bank, The W Pantry.
Computing & Information Technology began working with the W in April 2019. Every month, the central IT organization works with donation coordinators to choose an in-need item to collect in a large quantity. Past items have included ramen noodles, peanut butter, granola bars and more.
The collaboration effort was the idea of Cindy Sulad, C&IT enterprise project director. "No one should go hungry," Sulad said, who was introduced to the W via a campus event volunteers were supporting.
A single item is chosen not only to fill in any resource gaps at the W, but also to take the guesswork out of donating and make it easier for employees to participate.
In the near future, C&IT hopes to expand their donations to include their offices outside of 5925 Woodward by adding donation boxes to the Help Desk in the Student Center, and Canvas support offices in Purdy/Kresge Library.
Community outreach is an important part of C&IT, and the organization also supports commencement ceremonies and other campus events, as well as offering a yearly undergraduate scholarship funded by employee donations.
The W Food Pantry provides currently enrolled Wayne State Warriors in need of food assistance with supplemental food and additional resources to enhance student success. Learn more about the W Pantry at thew.wayne.edu.
