Secure your online presence this Data Privacy Day

Jan. 28 is Data Privacy Day. Keeping personal information Warrior Secure is a priority for C&IT’s Information Security Office every day — here are some tips to help you protect yourself:

  • Understand how websites use your data: Websites and advertisers use cookies to save your shopping carts, save your login credentials, and track what pages you’re visiting. Read more about cookies at https://store.hp.com/us/en/tech-takes/what-are-computer-cookies
  • Review app permissions: Some apps will ask for access to your location, contacts, camera and photos, and files.

  • Limit what you share: Social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, offer several privacy options to secure your content.

  • Don’t give away your data: Don’t share your name, email or home address if you’re not sure where it’s going and what it will be used for. Think twice before share your Social Security Number. Confirm the site is legitimate before entering any personal information.

  • Choose privacy alternatives: Search engines like DuckDuckGo, messaging apps like Signal, and the incognito mode on your web browser collect less, if any, personal information about you.
