Keep your devices safe while traveling

Wherever you roam, C&IT hopes you travel safe and have a great time. The Research & Education Networks Information Sharing & Analysis Center has some tips to keep your information secure at home and abroad:

Physical security

  • Be aware of your surroundings and only carry the items you need.
  • Keep your devices out-of-sight when you aren't using them.
  • Purchase privacy screen protectors to prevent people peeking over your shoulder.
  • Use a RFID blocking wallet to protect credit and debit cards, enhanced IDs, keycards and similar items.
  • Device security

  • Use a VPN to secure your connection: Learn to set up Wayne State's VPN, at https://tech.wayne.edu/kb/security/security/830. Be aware that some countries may block a VPN connection.
  • Back up your important data before traveling: Devices may be lost, stolen or damaged during travel. If possible, take a second device that only contains data you need while you're traveling.
  • Use the private browsing mode in your web browser: To get started, here are the steps for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari.
  • Enable two-factor authentication: Visit https://twofactorauth.org/ to see which sites support two-factor authentication and how to set them up. Wayne State employees are required to use Duo Two-Factor Authentication to access some university resources.
  • If you have any questions about traveling with a university-owned device or using university data overseas, contact your local tech support for further guidance. For more cybersecurity tips while traveling, visit tech.wayne.edu/docs/waynestate_ren-esac_travelsecurity.pdf
