C&IT changes VPN licensing to meet off campus work demand

To support the increasing demand on our virtual private network (VPN), C&IT is replacing our current VPN, Pulse Secure, with PaloAlto GlobalProtect, this afternoon, March 13. This program will be installed automatically on all DeskTech supported computers. Other users will need to manually install the software; If you do not have administrator rights on your device, contact your local tech support.

What is a VPN?

A VPN allows your computer to securely connect to the WSU network when you are away from campus.

When should I use VPN?

You should use the VPN to access secure WSU systems from your home internet, including Banner Admin Pages, Cognos, STARS, Remote Desktop, and departmental shared drives.

Once you have accessed the resources you need, please disconnect from the VPN to free up available licenses.

Which VPN should I use?

  • PaloAlto GlobalProtect: Staff who need access to Banner Admin Pages, Cognos, STARS, and remote desktop. Find installation instructions at tech.wayne.edu/kb/security/wsu-virtual-private-network/500212.
  • Pulse Secure: Reserved for IT support staff with specific access. If you are not IT support, please remove Pulse Secure and switch to GlobalProtect.
  • Neither: Accessing Academica, Canvas, Self-Service Banner in Academica (timesheets, payroll information, etc.), or email does not need a VPN connection.

Help and support

Due to the immediate timeframe of implementation, this change has not undergone our entire testing process. If you encounter any issues, please contact the C&IT Help Desk with details, including your operating system. Do not include personal information, such as passwords.
